Good morning!
Today is a reflection day.
I am a talker. I suppose that is helpful for a preacher. But I know I can overdo it. In my reflection on our recent Bible reading, this verse popped off the page:
For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power. (1 Corinthians 4:20)
I once attended the funeral of a young man named Scott – just thirty years old. He had just graduated medical school and was a man of great Christian character, witty and handsome. He knew and loved Jesus and shared Him with everyone He met. Two men gave eulogies during the service. One was a television broadcaster – a polished professional. He spoke with great ease and skill. But he was not a believer. The second man was a common working fellow, and he spoke with stammers and false starts. His notes were shaking like a leaf in the wind because he was so nervous. But He, like Scott, knew our Lord, so he spoke of Scott’s faith, the Gospel of Jesus and of the certainties of heaven. During the reception, I heard not one comment about the smooth pro’s talk. But I overheard many who were profoundly moved as God spoke through the humble guy.
Human words of eloquence or persuasion, speech that delights and entertains, and lengthy explanations can get our attention. But the reality of God’s kingdom is one of power – great and overwhelming power. And that power flows through us every time we speak of Jesus.
in Him, Mike
