Text: Genesis 43-46; Psalm 15
The sovereignty of God is on display in today’s Genesis reading. Joseph has been sold into slavery by his brothers, imprisoned and then elevated to power. The brothers come to him (unknowingly) to find food during a famine. After a bit of cat-and-mouse, Joseph reveals his identity. The brothers are naturally frightened, but Joseph sees things in the surprising light of God’s plan and grace. He says this to his siblings:
“And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.” (Genesis 45:5)
When we see our troubles and trials from a ground-level perspective, we do not respond like this. Instead, we get even, or demand apologies and amends. But when we look at our lives from the perspective of a good God who is in control of all things – including our miseries – what we see are His good purposes and His good character.
Do you have a struggle in your life this day? Do you think God has a good purpose? Do you think God has it in hand, or has He lost control? Whatever you are going through, He is working, and He is good.
