Good morning!
Text: Matthew 5-7; Psalm 61.
There’s a year’s worth of daily devotionals in the Sermon on the Mount, today’s reading! In 5:13 we read:
“You are the salt of the earth…”
Salt is a savor to the taste. It is an irritant to a paper cut. We are to be salt. These words are sandwiched between blessings pronounced for those persecuted on account of Jesus (5:11-12) and the idea that, as the light of the world, we are to let our light shine so others, ” see our good works and give glory to our Father who is in heaven.” (5:16). The idea is that, if we are faithfully following Jesus, we ought to get a reaction from people. And it won’t be lukewarm. It will be either hot or cold, love or hate.
Some don’t like to create a response, so they have watered Him down so much that nobody notices. How about us? So, does your life in Christ make people around you have a reaction? If not, it is time to get salty.
in Him, Mike
