Good morning!

Text: Deuteronomy 5-7; Psalm 41

The Lord gives some sweeping instructions to His chosen people in these portions of Deuteronomy.  In particular, this passage is often recited as part of Jewish worship today:

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.  And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. (Deuteronomy 4:4-7)

In my reading of this today, I am grabbed by the emphasis on passing God’s Word on to our children.  It is to be taught to them “diligently.”  We are to speak of God’s Word as part of everyday life, from morning until evening, at home and away.  The responsibility is given to parents (fathers in particular – see Ephesians 6:4).  Do we understand this great responsibility?  Do we teach God’s Word to our children like these words tell us?
