Text: Leviticus 5-8; Proverbs 14:19-35
In Leviticus 8 we read the account of the ordination of original priests of Israel, Aaron and his sons. They are set apart for service to the Lord, and the priestly ministry is set to begin. Priests are those who stand between God and man – representing one to the other in prayer, worship and the proclamation of God’s Word. In the process of setting them apart to serve, we see this:
Then he presented the other ram, the ram of ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. And he killed it, and Moses took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. (Leviticus 8:22-23)
The blood on the body parts has powerful symbolic meaning. The blood makes Aaron “right” with God. His ears are symbolic of obedience – the ancient words for obedience have the verb “to hear” at their root. To obey God we must listen. And the fingers and toes speak to the actual work of God. To hear is not enough – we must also do. As the blood was applied to Aaron and his sons, may the blood of Jesus confirm our obedience and our deeds – fully given over to Him and His glory.
