Text: Job 25-27; Isaiah 4
Job’s three friends have all brought Job the same answer to the question, “Why suffering?” They all say that it is the consequence of Job’s sin. The truth is much deeper, but Job’s friends never get to it. In Job’s third and final answer to Bildad (Chapter 26), he ends with a profound truth (26:14):
“Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?”
Our knowledge of God is limited to what we can grasp based upon our senses and understanding. The truth is, He is much more complex and beautiful and splendid than we are even able to comprehend. It is as if we are standing looking at the foothills of mighty mountains but have never climbed to the summits. It is like the approaches to a great city. When we drive to New York City, the traffic gets thick, apartment houses begin to appear along the highway, but we do not see the skyscrapers until we get pretty close. We have yet to behold the skyscrapers of God.
Job’s statement reminds us that, while we are in awe of God’s majesty and power, we still do not truly grasp how incredible He is. We have only a “small whisper” compared to “the thunder of His power.” The marvelous news is that we are going to get to see Him in the fullness of His glory someday.
