Text: 2 Chronicles 1-4; Psalm 102
As 2 Chronicles opens, we read of the establishment of Solomon’s reign over Israel. His father David had established Jerusalem as the capital. It is interesting that as Solomon comes to power, his first move is to seek and worship the Lord:
And Solomon, and all the assembly with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon, for the tent of meeting of God, which Moses the servant of the Lord had made in the wilderness, was there. (2 Chronicles 1:3)
Gibeon is six miles northwest of Jerusalem. Although the ark was in the city, the tabernacle – the place of worship and sacrifice – was at Gibeon. Solomon offers a thousand sacrifices there, and it is there that the Lord appears to him at night as he receives the gift of wisdom. It is notable that it was the Lord who spoke first, asking Solomon what he wanted as the new king (1:7).
So what’s the point? The right place to start is always to simply seek the Lord. Solomon did not go to ask for anything, he just went to seek God. How about us? When we enter our prayer time, do we just seek to be with Him or do we come bringing our list of needs? How about our approach to Sunday worship. Do we come to receive, or do we simply come to be in His presence?
