Good morning!
Text: Matthew 11-13; Psalm 63
Matthew 13 brings a flood of parables from Jesus. Parables are stories that convey a spiritual truth. Jesus explains that they are spiritually targeted, and intentionally difficult to understand for many. Only those the Lord wishes to understand will in fact understand. Jesus explains some of the parables to His disciples, and so we are given the inside track.
One parable that grabbed my attention is the parable of the weeds of the field (13:24-30), which Jesus explains beginning in 13:37. Jesus says,
“The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom.”
Those are startling words. I came to know Jesus at the age of thirty nine, and my experience of Jesus would seem to me that I was just “me” and then He came along and straightened me out and I became His. But, what Jesus says is that He planted me from seed. I was His in the first place, and always was. I don’t know about you, but that is a pretty astonishing idea. You and I, as children “of the kingdom”, are a crop Jesus planted. He is the sower, the farmer, the sun and the rain. He is the reaper, too. We were His from the start, and we are being grown by Him and are to bear fruit for Him. You and I are a “crop.” Amazing!
