Good morning!
Text: Numbers 33-35; Psalm 37:23-40
On January 12, 2001, I was fired from my big-dog corporate job. It was a Friday. Just before lunch I was invited into my boss’ office where the Human Resources VP gave me my severance paperwork. I was shocked, but had been well prepared by the Lord to pray on the spot and to trust in him. After the meeting, I phoned Lyn and left for home. A few minutes after I got home, my pastor and his wife arrived. After hugs, we sat in the living room. Before we prayed, he opened his Bible and read Psalm 37:25;
“I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.”
When I read those words again as part of today’s reading, I am reminded how good God is, how He always takes care of His children, and also of how much strength and comfort His Word can bring when we are in a crisis. Indeed, He never, ever forsakes us. We need never fear. That event – getting fired – allowed me to hear God’s call to become a pastor. The severance package was large enough to pay for my seminary education, and the Lord had previously led us to pay off our mortgage so we were debt free. He is amazing!
As Psalm 37:40 says, “The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.” Amen!
in Him, Mike
