Good morning!
Text: Malachi 3-4; Isaiah 55
Today’s readings are a treasure trove! Many verses have been underlined in my Bible. I have marked them each as they have spoken to me with clarity and power. Today, this verse caught my attention:
But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. (Malachi 4:2)
The author of the Christmas carol, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”, speaks of Jesus as “the sun of righteousness risen with healing in his wings”. What a combination – righteousness plus healing. For us, righteousness – purity, obedience, the condition of being “right” with God – feels like an impossible challenge in our weakness and sinfulness. But in Jesus it is ours. By His blood we have received Jesus’ righteousness in place of our guilt and shame. And Jesus also brings us the healing we need from the wounds of unrighteous deeds those at the hands of others and also our own. No wonder the angels sang at Jesus’ birth.
