A few days ago, our reading passed through an important text – Ezekiel 28:11-19. I recommend a re-reading of it. It is the conclusion of prophetic words of judgment and lament over Tyre, a coastal city-state of great wealth and renown. What is unusual about the conclusion is that is suddenly takes on a supernatural character.
Commentators write that this passage is about Satan, the great fallen angel. In verses 11-15 we read of him in heaven before his rebellion. He is described as “the signet of perfection, full of beauty, perfect in wisdom…” This reminds us that Satan is not a trifle but is real and powerful. Then, in verse 16 we see that unrighteousness is found in him and he is cast down – out of heaven and onto earth. Jesus tells us, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven…” (Luke 10:18). In Ezekiel 28:17-19 we read of his sojourn on earth to its final conclusion – a yet future event. The best part is the finale –
you have come to a dreadful endand shall be no more forever
Even though Satan is still abroad in the land, stealing, killing and destroying (John 10:10), Jesus has already defeated him, dooming him to a dreadful end where he shall indeed “be no more forever.” And by His blood, we have been delivered from Satan’s clutches and have the promise of life after Satan is no more. Praise Jesus!
