Text: Nehemiah 1-3; Psalm 118:15-29
The book of Nehemiah chronicles the rebuilding of the city wall of Jerusalem. Nehemiah is the leader of the effort. When he surveys the broken down city, he weeps. Their enemies were mocking them and the Lord’s name was being defamed. He goes to the people who will help with the work and says,
“You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” (Nehemiah 2:17)
To build their confidence he adds these words:
And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good (2:18)
Their response is to say,
“Let us rise up and build.” (2:18)
These words speak to us today. Neither Nehemiah nor the Jews present had caused the destruction they were faced with. But they understood that they were the only ones who could do the repair work. So they stepped up to the task. We live in times where there are many broken down walls around us. Our nation is in moral decay, and there are churches in great spiritual need, some have even fallen away from the Gospel. In our day, you and I are the only ones who can do the work to rebuild the walls. The hand of our God has been with us – just think of how we have seen Him do good in our midst. It is time to arise and start the rebuilding. Are you in?
