Text: Obadiah; Psalm 111
Obadiah is an unusual book of prophecy as it speaks out against Edom, a nation descended from Esau, Jacob’s brother. For Israel, Edomites were cousins, and there was constant conflict between the two nations. The occasion of this book is a time when Jerusalem was invaded and Edom stood by. Verse 11 brings a precept for us today:
On the day that you stood aloof,on the day that strangers carried off his wealthand foreigners entered his gatesand cast lots for Jerusalem,you were like one of them. (Obadiah 11)
When we see injustice against anyone, when we see God’s people persecuted, when we see evil being perpetrated on others, how do we respond? How about if the victims are folks we have had difficulties with? Do we look the other way? Do we avoid involvement? Or do we take a stand for the good and step up and take the risk by helping? Makes me think of re-reading the story of the good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37).
