Good morning!
Text: Job 37-39; Isaiah 8.
Our reading of Job thus far has taken us through the ruminations of men trying to understand God. In Job 38:1-3, the Lord finally speaks. I have always delighted in His opening words to Job;
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.
The Lord stands Job right up straight and sets the relationship straight. God asks the questions. We answer to Him. His is the majesty, ours is the humility. What follows is the Lord asking myriad questions – the answers are all examples of His wisdom and power as seen in the natural phenomena all around Job in His ancient world. Our God is great and awesome and sovereign. He is mysterious as well, but not so mysterious as to be unknowable. The very fact that He deigns to speak to us is evidence of His love and of His desire that we know Him. The fact is, though, that He is immense, complex, and wise beyond our capacity to fully grasp. He wants us to understand at least that, too. What an incredible, awesome God!
