Text: Nehemiah 8-10; Psalm 119:17-32
When the Book of the Law is read aloud in the presence of the assembly of all Israel, it has a profound effect. It launches God’s people into a lengthy time of worship and repentance. The Word does that – it stirs God’s people to get right with Him, to worship Him, and to serve Him. One scene that caught my attention is in Nehemiah 9:3:
And they stood up in their place and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day; for another quarter of it they made confession and worshiped the Lord their God.
Imagine that. Three hours of Bible reading followed by three hours of confession and worship. And this is just one day in what was a worship service that literally lasted weeks. That sounds pretty extreme in the context of today’s Church, but consider it in the context of attending a Red Sox game. Add up the hours for travel, traffic, and the game and six hours makes sense. Games might be fun to attend, but the Word of God is able to transform lives and even nations. What seems more important to us?
