Good morning!

Text: Hosea 12-14; Psalm 95

When I was a child, the church we attended used the opening verses of Psalm 95 as a call to worship, an invitation to enter the Lord’s presence, so these words have a familiar comfort to them. However, one verse that gives me pause as I read it now is this:

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! (Psalm 95:6)

In our modern worship services, our first impulse when we worship is to stand.  Whether invited by the worship leader or in response to familiar refrains of some worship song, we come to our feet. The picture here in these words is different.  The picture here is more humble.  “Bow down,” it says.  “Let us kneel,” it says.  It is seldom that we use these postures in our worship… or anywhere else in life for that matter. To stand is a gesture of honor and awe. These are good. But to bow and kneel adds humility.   It has me thinking.
