Text: 1 Chronicles 24-26; Song of Solomon 4
The various clans and families of the Levites had particular assignments for all the elements of worship at the tabernacle and later the temple. When the tabernacle arrived in Jerusalem, King David set about organizing all these efforts. 1 Chronicles 25:1 says;
“David and the chiefs of the service also set apart for the service the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who prophesied with lyres, with harps, and with cymbals.”
What a curious word, “prophesied.” It means to speak forth the Word of God as His spokesman. The prophet’s words are inspired by the Holy Spirit, and are God Himself speaking. When one quotes a prophet, one is quoting the Lord God Himself.
These leaders of music were ministering in that way. We see here the Lord’s intent and plan to speak to us through music. The lyrics they sang were from God’s mouth, accompanied by the music of lyres, harps and cymbals. The measure of our worship songs is not in the style, the melody nor the meter, but in the words. Are they true? Are they Biblical? Are they Scripture? Does God speak through our worship? Are we listening for Him when we sing?
