Text: 1 Kings 1-3; Psalm 78:1-39
As David’s life comes to an end, there is a struggle for the throne of Israel. Solomon is appointed and anointed as king. After he consolidates his power, the Lord appears to him in a dream and tells Solomon to ask for what God might give him. As Solomon responds, he includes these words:
And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. (1 Kings 3:7)
These words are a little surprising for a man who has just ascended to the throne of the nation – God’s chosen one over God’s chosen people. Solomon’s humility leads him to discern what his real need is – wisdom to lead – and so he asks for that. God grants his request, and also provides wealth and fame.
Humility is always the right starting place when it comes to our relationship with the Lord. He is so grand, so vast, so wise and so powerful, so very perfect in every way…. and we are so small and frail, foolish and wicked. Whether our relationship with the Lord is fresh and new – as “babes in Christ” – or mature from years of walking with the Lord – we are always as little children compared to Him. May we always come back to humble before our God and King. The way “up” in God’s Kingdom always begins with “down”.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. (James 4:10)
