Text: 2 Samuel 18-20; Psalm 75
Violence and sorrow fill these pages of 2 Samuel. David’s sin with Bathsheba and Uriah continues to bring heartbreaking consequences. It is difficult to read David’s words when he learns that his beloved first son, Absalom, is dead. His words are heart wrenching;
“O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!” (2 Samuel 18:33).
It is David’s own sin that started this awful chain of events. These events are a grave reminder to us of the consequences of our sin. This is a powerful reminder that every sin we commit has the potential for sweeping loss – way beyond our own selves. “Nobody’s going to get hurt” is a lie from the pit. May we always take pause to remember this truth when temptation appeals to us.
That said, what we see in David is a heart like God’s own who would rather give his own life than see his beloved die. Though Absalom’s sins of presumption were great, Davis’s love as a father was dominant. Sin is awful, but love is strong. Praise the Lord that His love has overcome our sin.
