Text: 2 Samuel 14-17; Psalm 74
As Absalom pursues his rebellious course against his father, King David, he receives counsel from two advisers. One, Ahithophel, proposes a wise plan for victory. The other, Hushai, lays out a plan that will result in Absalom’s defeat. Unbeknownst to Absalom, Hushai is loyal to David. Behind all of this, our great and sovereign God is at work:
And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring harm upon Absalom. (2 Samuel 17:14)
This really provokes me to think about the times I have sought wisdom about a matter. Sometimes I hear contradictory voices. To whom shall I listen? If the Lord is directing my choices, it then falls to me to choose trusting that He is in the midst of my choosing. Trusting the Lord is more important than getting it “right.” And, sometimes He may be leading us to choose a path that leads us to defeat. When He does, He is always advancing His will for our lives and for His kingdom. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good…” (Romans 8:28).
