Text: 2 Kings 22-25; Psalm 91
Psalm 91 has been a source of great comfort to many who are threatened or ill. It is said that many soldiers crossing the beaches of Normandy on D-Day had a copy of this Psalm in their helmet. It describes a God who protects and preserves, who keeps from harm. In the opening two verses, we find four names of God – the Most High, the Almighty, the LORD (Yahweh) and my God. They point to his sovereignty, His power, His personal interest in us, and our personal relationship with Him. Those last two are in full view in verse 14;
“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name.”
Whenever we are afraid, rather than whistling a happy tune, we ought to turn to this Psalm. These are words of life and safety, surety and comfort.
“He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:4).
