Good morning!
Text: 2 Samuel 11-13; Psalm 73
After David sins with Bathsheba and kills her husband Uriah, he is confronted by the prophet, Nathan. Nathan tells David a little parable about a man who abuses his power to steal a poor fellow’s only little ewe lamb. Nathan’s story appeals to David’s sense of justice, which is strong, and David reacts with outrage.
Nathan said to David, “You are the man!” (2 Samuel 12:7).
It took courage for Nathan to do this, and worked – David came to repentance. David, the man “after God’s own heart”, a man of great valor and love for the Lord, a man of justice and mercy, also had a horrible blind spot. What was needed was for David to be made aware of that blind spot. Interestingly, “Nathan” means “gift” in Hebrew.
How about us? Do we have such blind spots? Of course we do. And do we have a “Nathan” in our lives – one who knows us well enough and who can safely let us have it when we need it? If not, pray that the Lord might provide one – and when He does, listen to what he or she tells you.
