Text: 1 Samuel 10-12; Proverbs 26:1-16
One of the miracles of our life with God is that He is able to change us into new creatures. We become something new, something we were not before. We see the promise of this in the ministry of the Holy Spirit in Saul. In 1 Samuel 10:6, Samuel tells Saul, “Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.” The Spirit is able to turn Saul “into another man.” As God fulfills those prophetic words in Saul’s life, in verse 9 we read that, “God gave him a new heart.”
When it comes time to crown Saul as king, a curious thing happens. Samuel assembles all the people, but Saul is nowhere to be found. 1 Samuel 10:22 records this:
So they inquired again of the Lord, “Is there a man still to come?” and the Lord said, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.”
Saul is found, brought out and crowned as the people cry out, “Long live the King!”
The Word is not forthcoming about what Saul’s problem was. Perhaps fear, anxiety or shyness was afflicting him. As we will see however, Saul’s life as king is characterized by the sorts of behavior that comes from a deep lack of confidence. So, here is a challenge: Am I confident in what the Lord is doing in my life – or am I hiding among the baggage?
