Good morning!
Text: 1 Samuel 1-2; Proverbs 24:23-34
How careful are we with our words? Young Samuel is called by the Lord, set apart to serve the Lord, and used by the Lord as a prophet. A phrase in 1 Samuel 3:19 is most curious:
And Samuel grew, and the was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.
The Lord Himself “let none of his words fall to the ground.” I am reminded of the etiquette I was taught as regards the American flag: Out of respect and honor, our flag must never be allowed to touch the ground. The idea that words given to Samuel by God were words of truth, power and integrity – and were always to be honored – is captured here. Another image is of food that is dropped and thus no longer edible. The words that come from one who is close to God and serving Him are to always be worthy and to never be wasted.
The same Spirit of God that is in each of us who belong to Jesus worked in Samuel so that all of his words were of use and value to God. As we read the Word of God, and as we speak to others by His Holy Spirit, how are our words? Are they noble, true and powerful? Are they of such value that the Lord Himself would prevent them from falling to the ground? Or do some of our words belong on the ground? Makes one think.
Another thought… If we say what the Lord puts in our heart, He will make sure our words do their work. The Word of God, when it leaves our lips, will be carried by God Himself to the ears He has prepared to hear.
When it comes to our words, be careful, but also be bold.
