The Book of Judges is filled with unsettling stories – Jephthah’s daughter, Samson’s foolishness with women, the story of Micah’s idols and priest, and more to come. Words that repeat several times in Judges are these:
In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. (Judges 17:6)
These disturbing goings on have a root cause. For lack leadership, people are left to make up their own ideas about right and wrong. Often people are likened to sheep in the Bible. People need to be led. Good leadership brings people under the safety of a moral compass – the truth of the Word of God, and worship of the Living God. Judges is setting the stage for the introduction of human kings in Israel. In their humanity, these kings prove insufficient. They point us to our need for a perfect King – King Jesus.
The culture we live in today has drifted deeply into territory where everyone is doing “what is right in his own eyes.” Our world needs a king – King Jesus.
