Text: Judges 13-15; Proverbs 18
In Judges 13 we find the opening of the story of Samson, memorable from Sunday school days for his strength and for his hair and such. The story opens with a familiar Biblical setting – a couple with a wife who was barren. An angel appears to her and tells her she will have a son, and tells her of the special conditions (no strong drink, Nazarite vow, etc.). Her husband, Manoah, seeks an audience with the angel, and it happens. The angel won’t dine with them, but suggests an offering be made to the Lord. Manoah asks the angel his name. His response:
And the angel of the Lord said to him, “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?” So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, and offered it on the rock to the Lord, to the one who works wonders, and Manoah and his wife were watching. (Judges 13:18-19)
In Isaiah 9:6 it is foretold that Jesus’ will have the name, “wonderful.” It means “full of wonders (miracles).” Here the Lord, the Great I AM, is described as “the one who works wonders.” Our God is indeed capable of wonders – miraculous things beyond our imagining. Do we believe in miracles? I hope so. The resurrection itself is a great miracle, as is our new birth and new life in Jesus. He is “Wonderful,” and we are right to trust Him, expecting great miracles. Amen!
