Text: Leviticus 25-27; Proverbs 17:15-28.
In Leviticus 25, we read very detailed instructions about buying and selling property as considered against the backdrop of the “year of jubilee.” The idea is that after every forty nine years, all property reverts to the former owner and all slaves are set free. It links to the Sabbath idea – the underlying principle that all time belongs to the Lord and to be reminded of that truth we are to surrender one day in seven fully to Him. The Lord applies this same precept to land:
“The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine. For you are strangers and sojourners with me. (Leviticus 25:23).
This world is not our home, and this stuff is not our stuff. He owns it all. We are just tenants. He owns all our undertakings, our wealth, our house and our cars. We are just “managers” of God’s possessions. So, just how tightly do we hold our sense of “property rights”? If we get this truth – that it actually never “mine” – then we always hold our possessions in an open hand. Everything belongs to the Lord, and our heart should be to ask Him what He wants us to do with it.
