Text: Lamentations 1-2; Isaiah 28
Lamentations finds us in the midst of the terrible siege of Jerusalem at the hands of the Babylonians. The people are in big, big trouble – as a result of their own sin. The situation is grave – there is starvation, pestilence, thirst and fear. Desperation, hopelessness and helplessness fill the air. Lamentations 2:19 says this:
“Arise, cry out in the night,
at the beginning of the night watches!
Pour out your heart like water
before the presence of the Lord!
Lift your hands to him
for the lives of your children,
who faint for hunger
at the head of every street.”
Passionate (“cry”), persistent (“night watches” begin every four hours) prayer is always the answer when we are helpless… which is all the time.
