Text: Joel; Psalm 149
The prophet Joel paints a picture of great desolation, complete and sweeping, that will come upon God’s people because of their sin. Following the destruction will come restoration. As far as God’s people, their role is to turn their hearts back to the Lord.
“Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
and rend your hearts and not your garments.”
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
and he relents over disaster. (Joel 2:12-13)
Whenever disaster comes, this is our right response. We turn to Him knowing of His great goodness. He is gracious – He gives unmerited favor, abundant and rich. He is merciful – if our calamity is of our own doing, He is quick to forgive. And he is “abounding in steadfast love.” His love is vast and His love never wavers. Catastrophe? Disappointment? Desolation? Turn to the Lord and be blessed.
