Text: Deuteronomy 20-22, Psalm 46
Twice this week I have been at the bedside of someone nearing the end of life. Both times we shared the powerful words that open today’s Psalm:
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear… (Psalm 46:1-2)
Three powerful reasons to not be afraid: 1. “God is our refuge” makes me think of the stockade in the old western, a fortress impenetrable. With God we are safe and sound. 2. “…and strength” reminds me of a strong dad. “My dad can beat your dad at arm wrestling.” In any fight – god wins. 3. And finally the idea that He is a “very present help”. He is here. Right now. I do not have to summon Him. He is already with me. Great news. Never fear!
