Text: Genesis 10-11; Psalm 4
Again I am reminded how important Genesis is to our understanding of reality, humanity and God. Genesis 10:1 introduces some genealogies with these words:
These are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood.
There are two ideas which strike me. First, we are, every single one of us, descended from Noah and one of his three sons. After the flood, these four were the only men alive in all the earth. All of humanity is related – we are family. Second, the various names that follow speak to God’s plans for particular people. The name “Eber” is highlighted in 10:21. He is the one we get the word “Hebrew” from. By the time we get to the end of Chapter 11, familiar names pop up, like Abram (Abraham) and his wife Sarai (Sarah).
God has a plan for each and every human – including you and me. That plan flows from our ancestry, flows to our present reality and flows into a future fulfillment. The question for us this morning is simple but not easy. Am I doing my very best to follow the Lord’s plan for my life? Or, do I struggle as I try to follow my own plan? How would I know the difference?
in Him, Mike
