Today is a reflection day.
In the introductory passage of Revelation, we encounter these words:
Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near. (Revelation 1:3)
This makes me think. Unlike the visual culture of our present day, the ancients communicated by speaking and hearing. The Word of God was transmitted orally. These words speak to the idea that there is special blessing, special power in the reading of God’s Word aloud. This Christmas, as we gather with family to celebrate, I plan to put this truth to work. I plan to read the Scriptures aloud.
