Text: 1 Thessalonians 3; 1 Chronicles 27-28
1 Thessalonians is sweet encouragement to an early church. One delightful image comes in 3:12:
…may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all…
This verse always makes me think of Mickey Mouse in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” – the sequence in the old classic movie, Fantasia. Mickey has been tasked with cleaning the sorcerer’s castle up. Mop and bucket in hand, he discovers the sorcerer’s spell book – and he enchants the mop and bucket. Don’t worry – I am not endorsing sorcery – it is a cartoon! Things quickly get out of hand as the mop and bucket multiply – and so does the water in the mop. Eventually, the whole castle is awash in rising waters. The image is of an out-of-control flood – an unstoppable increase..
Our life together in the Body of Christ is like that – but instead of wash water being out of control, it is our love! Our love for one another should be increasing and growing until it overflows. Then, our overflowing love should spill out to the other churches nearby and into the community. Ever increasing. Overflowing. Abounding. Love! And take careful note – the words say that it is the Lord who makes this happen. May He bring the flood of love among us!
in Him, Mike
