Text: Nehemiah 1-3; Psalm 118:15-28
Psalm 118 was sung as people went up to the temple to worship at the great Jewish feasts. It speaks of God’s salvation, of His Messiah, and of Jesus’ second coming. Many of the verses are familiar – used often in public worship in the church and also quoted in the New Testament. A favorite is 118:24:
“This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
Keeping this verse in context, it is needful to ask, “Just what day is ‘this’ day?” It is the day of worship. It is also the day of the resurrection of Jesus (verse 22 – “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.”) and the day of our own salvation (verse 14 – “…he has become my salvation.”). In our lives as Christians, “this” day is every day. So, today – this day – know that the Lord has made it, and rejoice. Rejoice in worship every day. Rejoice in his glorious resurrection every day. And rejoice in the joy of our salvation every day. Rejoice!
