Good morning!

Text: 2 Kings 1-4; Psalm 86

You may recall that the Lord instructed Elijah to find and anoint Elisha to be his successor as prophet to Israel (1 Kings 19:19-21). Later, when Elijah comes to the end of his ministry on earth, he and Elisha cross the Jordan River (Elijah was used by God to miraculously part the waters).

When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” (2 Kings 2:9)

A “double portion” brings two ideas into our view.  First, it was customary for the eldest son, the heir to the family name, to receive a double share of Dad’s wealth. This request signifies Elisha’s desire to be Elijah’s spiritual “heir,” inheriting both the authority and responsibility of his prophetic office. Second, a double share is, well, double.  In fact, the miracles recorded in Scripture for Elisha are double the count for Elijah.  The student outdoes the master.

Every one of us has a spiritual legacy in Jesus, and the Lord wants us to pass it on to the next generation.  When we do, the Lord is able to double the fruit.  So – a challenge:  What steps are we taking right now to connect with and pass the mantle on?  and… to whom?
