Text: Jeremiah 17-20; Proverbs 20
Jeremiah 17:9 is important, and explains an awful lot about our human nature:
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and
desperately sick; who can understand it?”
We need this powerful truth in our lives. We live in an age where people are encouraged to “follow their heart” – to let their inner feelings determine the direction of their lives, even their identity. Our heart, our inmost self, is a dangerous liar, and a villain rife with sickness. The person who trusts their feelings, their “true self” is headed for trouble and destruction. Thanks be to God for the gift of Jesus and with Him a new heart. If we have Jesus then we have the Holy Spirit. We must choose to follow Him instead of our own heart so can have the truth and wellness we all need. This verse reminds us of why we must never trust our inner feelings and urges – but always trust the Lord.
in Him, Mike
