Text: Psalms 58-60
These three Psalms were all written by David during times of duress – under threats, stress, strife. They honestly express his anguish, concern and dependence upon God. And all three Psalms finish by acknowledging that in God alone is our victory found.
Oh, grant us help against the foe,
for vain is the salvation of man!
With God we shall do valiantly;
it is he who will tread down our foes. (Psalm 60:11-12)
How often we look to our own strength, cunning and courage when we are confronted with difficulties. We are so used to operating in our own strength that it is natural to just “keep on keepin’ on” when problems arise. When the problems become more serious, we often just try harder. But this is folly. “Vain is the salvation of man.” Our efforts are never adequate to bring success. It is only when we turn to God that we find what we need in troubles. When we surrender to Him, “we shall do valiantly.” Our hope and confidence is in knowing that the Lord always wins. So, where in your life are you struggling in your own strength? Turn to the Lord. There is victory in Jesus!
