Text: John 16-18; Psalm 141
In John 18 we read about Jesus’ arrest in the garden of Gethsemane. Led by Judas, a posse comes to arrest Him. When Jesus identifies himself as the one they seek, a remarkable thing happens.
When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. (18:6)
The expression Jesus uses is the same as when the LORD answered Moses from the burning bush. Moses asks the LORD what name to use when he tells the Israelites he spoke to God. The LORD says, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I am has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:14). When Jesus speaks in the garden He says, “I AM”. We sing a song in our worship service with a chorus that begins, “There is power in The Name…of Jesus.” Jesus is the great I AM! Jesus is God, and He is power. At just the utterance of His Name, the military detail who would seize Him are knocked off their feet, This is that same Jesus in whose Name we gather, in whose Name we pray, and in whose Name we put our trust. Praise Jesus!
