In Matthew 20:17-19 we see that Jesus, for a second time, tells His disciples that He will crucified and rise again. That seems to me to be pretty important news. I find it astonishing what follows. In verse 20 it says,
“Then, the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons…”
She then proceeds to ask for special favors for her “boys”, James and John. Why that amazes me is that it follows immediately after Jesus gives them the profound news that He is going to die by crucifixion. Now, perhaps this makes sense if we read into it that she understood what He said, and is jumping ahead to Jesus’ kingdom following His resurrection. But, even if that’s the case, it still seems to me to be small and self-centered to immediately focus on what is close to home rather than on Jesus’ earth-shattering words.
I wonder how many times the Lord has spoken to me by His Word or His Spirit and tried to tell me something so huge, so amazing, that it would knock my socks off, and I was so preoccupied with my junk that I completely missed it. It is so very easy for us to think that the things in our lives are the main event. But, when Jesus is in the room, He is always the main attraction. Jesus is the one who should get our attention, and, of course, all the glory. Oh… and Jesus is ALWAYS in the room.
