Text: Luke 16 (Numbers 1-2)
Jesus tells the story of a rich man and a beggar who both died. The rich man went into the place of torment while the beggar went to heaven. In the story, the rich man begs for relief. A scary truth is revealed as the rich man is told from heaven:
And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us. (Luke 16:26)
When we die we all “fly away” (Psalm 90:10) to one place or another – either into eternal torment or into paradise. Our destination is determined by the decisions we make while we are still alive. Once we are dead the die is cast. If we have rejected God’s call to repentance while in this life, we will be lost forever in the next. There is no escape from Hell. This truth is harsh, but it is truth. It calls us to profound concern and urgency for those around us who are far away from God. See, we have Good News for them – for those who turn from sin and receive Jesus while still in this life, their destiny is paradise – secured, guaranteed and absolutely certain. So, who are the lost people you are praying for right now?
in Him, Mike
