Text: Mark 15 (Exodus 35-36)
The crucifixion of Jesus is a difficult and compelling scene. Jesus is tried, scourged then delivered up to be crucified, and then before facing the cross, He is abused by the Roman soldiers:
And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. (Mark 15:17-19)
What a portrait of human rebellion and cruelty. Imagine, having done that to Jesus, discovering who He really is. Imagine facing Jesus at the great judgment to come. Then imagine having come to believe the truth of Jesus, confessing these sins to Him in prayer, and being absolutely and completely forgiven. Imagine being welcomed into a sweet relationship where Jesus lavishes unimaginable blessings and abundance. Did you ever wonder if any of those Roman soldiers who mocked, beat and spat upon our Lord Jesus might greet us when we arrive in heaven? It is possible, you know. In fact it is no more unlikely than the odds that you and I might be saved. What an amazing God we serve, full of love, rich in mercy, and willing to save a wretch like me… and you.
in Him, Mike
