Text: Mark 5 (Exodus 15-16)
In Mark 5 we find the story of a synagogue ruler named Jairus whose little girl gets very sick. Jairus approaches Jesus for healing. Jesus agrees to accompany Jairus back to the girl. Before they arrive, they receive news that the girl has died. Some form Jairus’ house tell him that it is futile to trouble Jesus further.
But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” (Mark 5:36)
With Jesus, the game is never over. Jesus raises the girl from the dead. The message for us is clear. No matter how bad the news, no matter how hopeless things seem, Jesus is still able to rescue. We need not fear, we are to “only believe.” To believe is to trust. To believe is to know that Jesus keeps His word. To believe is to surrender our need to control. Notice it says “only” believe. We are not to do anything but just believe. And for me, sometimes that is a tall order.
