Text: Revelation 6; Joel 3
As we move into Chapter 6 we encounter four horses, each of a different color. The first is white:
And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer. (Revelation 6:2)
Revelation is filled with prophetic words and images, many of which are hard to understand. Different scholars have come up with various approaches to try to make sense of this. In this case, I am of the school that sees the four horses as representations of our present age – the Church age. We live in a time where Jesus is alive and present in His Body on earth, the Church. And yet the earth is not yet subdued and re-created under Jesus’ full reign. So we see Jesus on His white horse, conquering sin and liberating sinners – a conquering King. And at the same time we see poverty, pestilence, war, famine and death at work. It is a picture of the spiritual warfare we are presently enduring. Jesus is the conqueror. He will win. Life in this world is hard, but the King is alive and the future victory is assured. Amen!
