Text: James 3 (Esther 7-8)
James is a rich compendium of practical direction for Christian living. Consider these words:
“…a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” (James 3:18)
So often when I think of righteousness coming into our broken world filled with wickedness and sin, I think of the arrival of a great sword. I have an image in my head of battle, the sound of iron striking iron. I think of evil being vanquished by a victorious conqueror. My thoughts are not of peace. Yet the verse speaks of how peacemakers sow the seeds that grow into a harvest of righteousness. Words of Jesus like “love your neighbors” and “turn the other cheek” come to mind. These words of James 3:18 are something to think about the next time I feel the fire of anger rising up against injustice, unrighteousness, unkindness. When my impulse is to strike, peacemaking ought to prevail.
