Text: 1 John 1 (Job 19-20)
A verse I often quote is 1 John 1:9:
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
This is such a simple and remarkable thing. Whenever we sin, we separate ourselves from God as we defile our lives with unrighteousness. We are dirty, and as such not suited to stand in God’s presence. But the remarkable thing is that we are indeed welcomed by Him – under one condition. We must get honest before Him about our sin. The moment we do, we are forgiven and in fact “washed up.” I think of my mom’s taste for white wall-to-wall carpet in my childhood home and the risk of dirty feet. If I was on my way into the house with muddy feet she’d say “Don’t you dare come in here.” But the Lord says, “Come, come close, confess and I will wash away your sins.” It is so simple. And there is no reason for us ever to feel like we cannot come home.
