Text: Titus 1 (2 Chronicles 29-30)
Titus was a pastor, and Paul’s letter to him is instructive for us today as regards matters of leadership in the local church. First up in this letter is instruction to put church leaders in place:
…appoint elders in every town as I directed you… (Titus 1:5)
Our God is a God of order and of authority. He rules and reigns and is charge of all things. And in His created order, God has put authority and hierarchy in place. Now, this may rankle some folks these days. That said, God has given us the privilege and the responsibility to be co-regents with Him. He commanded Adam to “subdue” the earth. And for our blessing He has instituted authorities in all of human affairs. Our blessing is manifold. We are made in God’s image, so ruling is natural to us (there is authority in the Trinity, Father, Son, Spirit). Order allows us to be organized so as to be safe and productive. Human hierarchy teaches us how to be subject to the authority of visible leaders so that we can submit to an invisible God. So… elders. Every church is to be led by a group of spiritually mature and able leaders (read Titus 1:6-9). Please pray for the elders in your church.
in Him, Mike
